Ask...

...and it will be given to you.
====================================================================
by PAM

God answers prayers.  He does... and quickly, too.  Just last night, I was praying for patience and hopefulness to endure the 'extreme boredom' I have been feeling lately.  A few minutes after I said that prayer, he gave me (all of us, Barça fans, actually) this:

El Clásico, baby!  Oy! :)  If that did not give you a reason to pump your fist - with feelings - I don't know what else could.  I saw it LIVE (!) - uhm, well, via cable, actually. :)

This new edition of Clásico was relatively tamed, but I'm digging how Lionel Messi walked in last to complete the Barça line-up... with some discreet swagger - very, very cool!  And, boy, I love the way Neymar Jr. played his first El Clásico - totally fearless. He gave the Blancos absolutely no respect!  Awesome, awesome!  Fantastico, Braziliano!  Oy!  And that overhead chip by Alexis Sanchez that put the Blaugranes ahead by two goals was totally splendid!  I hope we see more of those in the near and distant future.  I have to say, I enjoyed the diva-ish protests of the 'one and only' football grand diva, Cristiano Ronaldo - the man who introduced "man purse" to the world is absolutely reliable for heavy drama on the pitch. :) But, to be fair, that was a penalty, it should have been called.  Then again, there were penalty-worthy contacts, too, against Barça that were not called.  Whatever, for as long as Victor Valdes denies the diva the limelight with heart-stopping saves, the second-most-expensive Blanco is as good as entertainment. So, carry on!

Visca, el Barça!

Boy, it's been forever since I last yelled that... and it feels great!

Wooing lady luck

And then this afternoon, it was beginning to feel like lady luck have decided to abandon me... I was stuck in heavy, crawling traffic on my way to the Electrical Engineers Oathtaking at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.  But, she changed her mind... looked my way, and smiled.  I made it to the very last part of the Program.  I got to celebrate with our graduates... and it felt like heaven!

Batch 2013 passing rate:  54/54... yep, 100%!  :)

Later in the evening, I heard Mass with a person I admire, respect and love.  She celebrated her 80th birthday with her family and friends by thanking God and hosting a delightfully sumptuous dinner... in the historic Manila Hotel no less.  She did not accept gifts... she simply requested her well-wishers to express their generosity instead with the children she supports in a shelter.  I kept wondering where she gets her energy at her age... she gets it from dedicating every kJ of energy she has in helping the needy.

Last night, I prayed for patience and hopefulness... I received those, and so much more today: inspiration, joy, excitement, exhilaration, and the warmth of friendship.

So, yep... 'ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you'.  It's as simple as that... it's as mysterious as that.

2011 Spanish Super Cup: brilliance + brawl = a disappointment

And the winner is... FC Barcelona! And the loser is... very sore!
====================================================
by Philipina A. Marcelo

And so... they did it again! The Spanish La Liga season
Xavi, Barça's vice-captain,
lifting their season opener
silverware acquisition.
opener victory goes to... Barça! The mighty reigning European Champions, FC Barcelona, crushed the visitors, Real Madrid CF, in the second leg of their Spanish Super Cup tie via a 3-2 victory at Camp Nou, 5-4 on aggregate. The Spanish football Titans' first-leg clash in Estadio de Santiago Bernabéu finished with a 2-2 draw last Sunday. Barça's game was looking a bit "off" their usual no-hole, hunt-in-a-pack on-the-pitch script while Los Blancos looked "in the zone". Nevertheless, the 2011 La Liga Champs had enough fire power to draw their away match. While the intensity was almost tangible, with a prayer, the "brawl" in Bernabéu remained all about football - and not much else. The El Clásico intensity continued, and the heat went fever-pitch, with the mightier than ever Catalans hosting the second leg, and this time, while brilliance shone from both sides, the intensity was such that many "saw red" - on the pitch! *sigh*

***
An exchange of brilliant fire powers... one deadlier than the other

Football fans were treated to many pieces of delightful El Clásico brilliance... well, at least, as far as football was concerned.

The talented man who slotted the 2010 World Cup-winning goal for Spain,
Too good. Iniesta chipped the Blanco Numero Uno's ego.
Andres Iniesta, was the first to come through with a sure-fire and, oh, so elegant touch - a great finish for a hard-fought through-ball from Barça's little genius, Lionel Messi. Iniesta sent the ball to the Madrid goal with a flick over Iker Casillas's head, burning some thread in the Blanco Numero Uno's net... and ego, 1-0. Refusing to be outshone, the visitors responded with gusto via a confused/confusing (literally) shot from Cristiano Ronaldo (or Sergio Ramos?) through a very nice Karim Benzema low cross from a Mesut Özil corner, sending the threads of Victor Valdes's gloves a-smokin' some, 1-1.

A few breaths before half-time, Messi caught Gerard Piqué's eyes... and Piqué's awesome back-heel pass, too. La Pulga took it
Two against one... and it was a Messi affair.
through to the Los Blancos defense - full-throttle - with the desperately-trying-to-catch-up Ronaldo at his heel, followed by Sami Khedira and Sergio Ramos. A swerve, and he lost Ronaldo and everyone else... and then he kicked the ball over the sprawled Casillas with a fire-pointed shot that sent a burning sensation, I imagine, on Real's #1, 2-1! It was a fiery message. The Catalans are not surrendering Camp Nou - never! And Los Blancos didn't miss the heat radiated by the Messi kick in the air either. Muscles flexed, jaws tighthened... but they all went for half-time break.

The Spanish Titans returned on the pitch for the second-half action...
Benzema, RM's worthy Knight.
eyes to victory. Real's Benzema broke the noisy silence with an exciting equalizer via deaf-focus in the midst of 20 men, all a-frenzy for the ball in the penalty area, following a corner kick from Kaká and a fiery header assist from Pepe. The effort resulted in a Benzema short-range shot that beat Valdes's reflexes - 2-2! Mercury went rising... the heat surged on!

The nervy score, and with only a few minutes left, would've been enough to send a weak man's knees wobbling. But those of the "debut boy"
Messi con Fàbregas, La Masia days all over again.
Cesc Fàbregas's, who came on from the bench in the second half with about eight minutes remaining, and those of the hardened Brazilian defender Adriano's were as steady as rock. They set up the on-fire Messi for a beautiful, beautiful goal, where the little genius stretched to slip Adriano's cross through the outstretched Pepe, and then through the completely-beaten-by-a-quarter-second Casillas to find the back of the Los Blancos goal - BRILLIANT! 3-2... Camp Nou erupted - in frenzied appreciation... and so did Mourinho's ego - suffocating in the thick air of defeat!

***
Somebody overdid it - and it was ugly!

I understand - intensity, intensity... and the Real Madrid and FC Barcelona players are such high achievers, none of them would like to hear about defeat. But, that doesn't warrant giving in to the "dirty
Bad boy Pepe, doing his thing.
tackle demon", which Pepe (of course!), and more so Marcelo, once again did. *sigh* Marcelo was exceptionally terrible this time. First, he sneaked a kick at Lionel Messi's side while pretending to reach the ball with a high jump. It sent Messi to the ground, feeling the pain... and Messi is one player who keeps going even when hurt and bleeding. But the terrible Marcelo got away with it, and so did Mourinho with his unsportsmanlike gesture at Lionel Messi, so unbecoming of the manager of one of the best sides on the planet, after Messi exchanged heated words with Marcelo. *sigh* Second, at 3-2 with Barcelona in the lead, smelling the strong scent of defeat, with just a couple more minutes to full-time, the Brazilian defender brought down Cesc Fàbregas with an unnecessarily forceful leg hack. I gotta admit, I darted to my feet - from shock - when I saw it! It was too reckless, irresponsible, terrible!! *fuming mad here* Marcelo was immediately shown a

when he's kicking the ball instead of

straight red card while Cesc went down writhing in pain. Like very good friends (and I gathered, they really are, too), the whole Barça squad came to Cesc... and a brawl erupted - of course! *sigh*

It was dizzying and confusing minutes, swimming through a flood of Blaugrana and Blancos shirts as stretched tempers snapped and exploding in a mass brawl! Soon Mesut Özil and David Villa, who have both been substituted and were sitting on their team's respective benches, were being pulled away from a puddle of Blaugrana and Blanco shirts - red cards being shown to both of them. Huh?? Aren't they two of the nicest guys in the football universe? What happened? *sigh*

Tsk, tsk... but both sides were playing good football out there! Ugh, Marcelo! Why do you have to ruin it all?? Why can't you abandon the Mourinho dirty football tactic?! What a disappointment.... and very, very frustrating, too! *sigh*

***
And he did "it" again... he who is "special"

In the middle of all that frustrating and disappointing pushing and
Mourinho, sore loser.
pulling and yelling at the touchline, the camera caught a (seemingly deranged) man in black, sneaking to pull the ears/poke the eye of an unsuspecting Barça staff, who happened to be Barça's assistant coach, Tito Vilanova! And then the man walked away swiftly like a thief, and with an evil grin on his face, too (imagine???), when Vilanova turned to push him. The man in black was José Mourinho... yes, Real Madrid's "special coach" no less! sigh* The Real Madrid bench saw the pushing, and naturally, they thought Mourinho was being attacked without provocation... and a whole new trouble began! sigh* The Real Madrid Portuguese boss is crawling very low on cheap dirt now... extremely cheap - to the lowest pit of out-of-control insanity! *sigh, sigh, sigh*

And what did Mourinho have to say in his presscon after the match? Well,
Guardiola, cool victor.
some deranged sour graping comments - complete rubbish not worthy of printing, of course! Good thing Pep Guardiola kept his cool - as most of the time - and had nothing but good things to say about his Blaugrana men, "They made an enormous effort. They showed what they are like: eternal, legendary, unrepeatable and honest, people who like to train and play football... Honestly, looking at how they responded, it is a privilege and an honour to be their manager." When asked about how things turned ugly towards the end of the tie, he said, "We came to a situation at the end that we have taken badly. The pictures speak for themselves. They think we are always diving, and we think the opposite. I have model players, both on the pitch and in press conferences. We shall just carry on playing football and we shall be as quiet as we can. We are a team that wants to play football as well as possible."

Congratulations, Pep! CONGRATULATIONS, Barça!

As for Real Madrid, well, I hope that the Real Madrid leadership would
So, uhm... hey, Mou, does this hurt? :)
see what a disgrace Mourinho is to their Club. The Blancos have shown that they can have tremendous quality on the pitch, too - worthy opponents to the incredible Barça. The way most of them play, when they are playing honest football (say, in the Spanish National Team, for instance), make them great ambassadors of Spanish football as well... and of the beautiful game that is football, as a whole. Therefore, they deserve a better and more honorable manager - seriously!

More than a Club... and they are European Champions, too!!

Barҫa, Barҫa... Barҫaaaaaaaaa!!
======================================================
by Philipina A. Marcelo

And they did it! They are the 2011 European Champions! Woohoo!! Woot-woot!

They battled the Kings of English Football, Manchester United, and the Kings of Spanish Football prevailed, 3-1!! Hail the Kings of European Football! Barҫa, Barҫa... Barҫaaaaaaaaa!!

Greatness in all three Barҫa goals: Uno, after a wonderfully orchestrated play that almost culminated to a Pedro Rodríguez goal, the smooth Xavi Hernandez orchestrated another one... and Pedro Rodríguez completed it to a fantastic first goal! Sweet! A few minutes later, down but not (yet) out, Wayne Rooney exchanged a pass with Ryan Giggs, which momentarily sliced up the Barcelona defense as Gerard Piqué barred Giggs who was dangerously close to the goal. Wayne Rooney quickly took advantage and kicked an equalizer past Victor Valdes who was still eyeing Javier Hernandez and closely watching Ryan Giggs. That brought both Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola on their feet! And so, the first half closed with the two sides even on goals. Moving on... Dos, after a series of Barҫa attempts that scattered the Manchester defense to desperate disarray, bringing down Lionel Messi on the grass a number of times to cut the amazing thread of magic the little genius was weaving, Xavi "called things to order" with the ball. Andrés Iniesta received and passed, and Lionel Messi smashed the second goal in a flash around three stunned Manchester defenders - his first on English soil, and the one that dampened Manchester's spirit! Brilliant!! Of course, it smelled like a win from then on. Tres, Messi set it up, Sergio Busquets picked up and made a brilliant turn around to safety, passed it, David Villa received and kicked it - into the Manchester goal, over the stretched Edwin van der Sar! The third Barҫa goal that sealed the European championship! And there were many, many more fantastic attempts (16 total, 12 on target) with Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Dani Alves, Ibrahim Afellay, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué taking a shot, and a few more, at the Manchester goal coming out from some exquisite build ups via tiki-taka vs. meager attempts (three to be exact, only one on target) from the English Premier League's best. Edwin van der Sar was ManU's hero... the score would've been 3++ to 1 if not for his incredible focus and valiant saves.

It was a beautiful match. Barҫa playing their mesmerizing fast-paced football of lyrical beauty that involved every single body in Blaugrana jerseys on the pitch moving in such incredible synchronicity, and ManU trying to keep up with a lot of personality, too. Without a Mourinho hand anywhere in the New Wembley, there were no silliness nor ugliness... only mutual respect, brilliance, fun and excitement... and engaging football wholesomeness in a breathtaking "big boys' play" at the very apex of football beauty. Pep Guardiola once again showed the world that in football, the tiki-taka beauty can be both a delight and a formidable tactical offense - unbeatable, in fact.

People will continue putting "Pep Guardiola's Barҫa" and "the greatest football team ever" in the same sentence when they talk of the beautiful sport that's football, and the gentleman and ever humble Pep will continue to discourage such talk. But after being beaten - and beaten well - by Barҫa in the biggest football stage in Europe, Sir Alex Ferguson - himself, one of football's biggest fans - recognizes Guardiola's Barҫa as "the best in Europe, there's no question of that." And as the Catalans savored their moment of triumph in New Wembley, Sir Alex saluted them with a "they're enjoying the moment... and they deserve to because they are playing football the right way." As for me, words are not enough to describe any part of Barcelona's wonderful 2011 Champions League final showpiece. It's disrespectful to even try! Therefore, I'll leave it at that for now, with a simple CONGRATULATIONS!!! :) I'm a VERY PROUD fan!!! Woohoo!

Visca, el Barҫa!!!

All business...

...as usual!
=============================================
by Philipina A. Marcelo

And so the illustrious Kings of Donbass Arena fell in the hands of their hesitant conquerors from Catalonia in the second leg of their quarter-final UEFA Champions League tie. 1-0 in Donbass, 6-1 on aggregate... the Catalans did what no other European side have managed to do over the past couple of years now: beat Shakhtar Donetsk FC in Donbass Arena in a European competition... and in a fashion most awesome, worthy of mention in football records, too. The Catalans received nothing but respect and admiration from the Donbass miners led by their brilliant head coach, Mircea Lucesco. Even the Pitmen fanatics in Donbass were happy to see the best football player in the world today - Lionel Messi - re-write the football book of records in their very own oh, so daunting football field.

***
Serious business for the 'big boys'

No, Barҫa wasn't looking to bring the Pitmen on their knees. After that 5-1 first leg quarter-final win in Camp Nou six days earlier, they were simply "taking care of business" in Donbass. The business was to secure a slot in the "last four" of the UEFA Champions League, and to augment their confidence going into the Spanish La Liga's 'El Clásico' on the weekend at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. And so, the Catalans tried to dictate the pace of the game from the very start, and it was a blindingly fast-paced game, too! Josep Guardiola's and Lucesco's men took off - full throttle - as soon as the referee blew his whistle. They left no chance whatsoever for restroom breaks! The Pitmen obviously loved that pace, and they totally stepped on the gas - matching Barҫa every exciting step of the way, reiterating their ownership of Donbass. Soon, they appeared to be in the driver's seat. Their game plan was clear: get into the goalmaking business the soonest possible time, and try to force a miracle of making five goals in 90 minutes, with Barҫa remaining without a goal all night! They made it appear like it was doable by creating a dizzying slew of chances for themselves to score early on in the match! If the Catalan defenders appeared to have had a momentary dizzy spell care of Shakhtar's inspired aggression, Victor Valdes was not one to get dizzy though. Valdes protected the Barcelona goal with speed, agility and ferocity like he was the best goalie in the history of football, constantly forcing a frustrated shake-of-the-head from Lucesco! Valdes's beautiful but I'm-on-my-limit-here-guys-so-please-let's-get-our-defensive-act-together moves and Pep Guardiola's to-the-rescue instructions urgently yelled from the sidelines, sent a strong message to the rest of Azulgrana's first 11 to tighten the defensive wall. Quickly, Barҫa was on it, with Xavi Hernandez - the team captain - taking charge...a change in tactic: defend from the front.

As the early Shakhtar storm of goal attempts started to wear down, thanks to the very consistent Valdes and the go-ahead-try-us-it's-your-shin tough stance of the defence crew, which was reinforced by a menacing midfield, Catalonia's first 11 resumed business. They slowly rotated in front, converting defense-up-front to ferocious attacks. Soon the Catalans were firing at will! Lionel Messi was at the point of the spear, David Villa at his wing, and Ibrahim Affelay serving as "the other" surprising triggerman. Affelay, of course, was one of Pep Guardiola's yet-another-ace-up-my-sleeve-because-I-can-afford-it winks at the 'old wily cat' Lucesco. Sweet! And Lucesco probably thought Andres Iniesta's yellow card in the first leg would hurt the Catalans's chances in Donbass. Nope! Even without Iniesta, the Catalan attacks were solid and ferocious that Shakhtar was forced to slowly back off, feeling the heat. The pace went from blinding to are-you-guys-for-real blinding, and the excitement level went from whoa! to a killer, killer, killer pounds on the chest! At some point, even the referee who had all his instruments out to follow the incredibly fast-paced action took a tumble! The Donbass crowd, feeling the pressure on the Pitmen, also stepped up - cheering from the depth of their passion and lust for football! Shakhtar was willed by their fans to response to Barҫa's tough attacks, and they did so with raw adrenalin rush.

The rest of the first half of the match was a pull-push in the tie, with the young Shakhtar crew pushed to their limit and the Catalans having their hands full containing the fast-and-furious bullish Pitmen. Both Lucesco and Guardiola were on their feet - designing strategies on-the-spot to outdo the other side. And, so the two sides were engaged in "dynamic" strategy making, sending the players flying, and it was absolutely exciting! And then, in a moment of frenzied attack-defend, push-pull between the two sides, about two minutes before half-time, that "tricky" little genius from Argentina slipped through a trio of markers. While all was busy containing one another's marked men, Messi received a beautiful pass from a sprinting Dani Alves. He then went zigzagging around busy thoroughfare towards the Shakhtar goal. After breathtaking seconds of beautiful Messi moves, he slotted his 48th goal of the season against the dumbfounded Andriy Pyatov and a band of Shakhtar defender - to the dismay of the rest of the struggling Pitmen! While Shakhtar reeled from the sting of Messi's strike, knowing that their quest for a first UEFA Champions League title just slipped their precarious grasp for sure, the rest of the Catalan warriors knew they have moved to the semi-finals. The business deal sealed! And they celebrated like they have, indeed, moved to the semis! :)

The Catalan's first-half goal was extra-sweet in that Lionel Messi, who is this season's UEFA Champions League highest scorer so far with 9 goals, just surpassed a Club record for the most number of goals in one season. The Barcelona "talisman" has also equaled the global record for the most number of goals in one season. Even Pep Guardiola, aware of the significance of that goal, saluted Messi - pointing to him with a nod and a knowing smile. Even the Donbass crowd also showed appreciation, and understandably so! While Messi may have soured their team's Champions League aspirations, they were a part of football history unfolding right in their very own hallowed football ground. I was glad that from thousands of miles away, I was a part of it, too! :)

Little boys at play

When it was clear that all sorts of danger to unhinge the Barcelona hold on one of the four UEFA Champions League semi-final slots have been taken care of, Pep Guardiola started pulling out his first eleven from the Donbass field. Obviously, he was saving them for the big task come weekend in Santiago Bernabéu Stadium - the clash with Real Madrid CF in the first of four El Clásicos within three weeks. Shortly, with about 25 more minutes to play, the Barcelona side was dominated by substitutes. It was interesting though that Guardiola retained Dani Alves, Ibrahim Afellay and Lionel Messi in the field. Later, it became apparent to me what his intentions may have been. He was trying to help Lionel Messi thoroughly re-write history by surpassing even the global record of most goals in one season, and perhaps, reaching his half-century of goals in the season - all in the same match. And if Leo was to do that, Guardiola was wishing he'd do it in Donbass... not to spite the Pitmen, but to honor the hallowed grounds of Donbass - home of the next best squad in European football today, in my opinion - as a venue for such an awesome feat! But if he were to retain Messi in that dangerous field where Lucesco's men were still hotly gunning to, at least, retain their kingship in their home stadium notwithstanding the sweetness of a Messi record, Messi would need reliable wing men. Thus, Dani Alves and Ibrahim Afellay's extended stay in the field.

If Guardiola thought Lionel Messi had the smallest ounce of selfishness in his footballer's blood to use the energy and aggression of his peppered-with-substitute-and-therefore-have-nothing-to-lose side though, he was wrong! Lionel Messi, didn't own up to his stardom - once again. He chose to be a playmaker for Barcelona instead, stealing balls even from the fingertips of Pyatov and passing it to an open teammate for a goal. At one point, he went for an assist for Ibrahim Afellay in the latter's what could have been a moment of greatness. He stole the ball from a crowd of hungry boys and sped towards the goal, leaving a number of Pitmen struggling to catch up behind him to no avail. He aimed at Afellay, who matched his speed a few meters up front. As Adriy Pyatov went low to spring at Messi's strike, Messi passed the ball to Afellay who knew exactly what to do. Unfortunately, Pyatov have learned his lesson from Messi already and was quite ready for a shift to stop Afellay's assault. He stretched to prevent Guardiola's third trigger from causing a 2-0 Barcelona domination in Donbass, only to give Dani Alves a chance to kick the loose ball with brute force towards the goal from the midfield - he missed. It was a beautiful playmaking that even Pep Guardiola gave his men two thumbs up. While it didn't complete to a goal, the Catalans didn't even show disappoinment. They knew what business they came to accomplish, and they also knew that, at that point, the business deal was all wrapped up and in the bag... and they were ready to head back to Barcelona... and on to Bernabéu in the weekend with a 6-1 win on them against Ukraine's best! :) In the meantime, they were treating themselves to the sweetness of little boys' play - they deserved it, too! Even Pep Guardiola was indulging them. :)

***
Girls just wanna have fun

Oh, by the way, this may be unrelated, but I love the Catalans's away jersey! They look lovely in them, too - soft color over tough muscles! Aaaaw... :) Well, what can I say... hmmm, "while the boys took care of business, the girls were having fun"? :) That's just the way it goes, I think... and it feels just right as well! ;)
