I was looking for something in my room last weekend, and I stumbled over an old CD that I haven't seen in a long time, it's "The Singles 81 > 85" by Depeche Mode. While I haven't been listening to DM in a long time, the minute I saw the album, I knew exactly which single I wanted to listen to. It was this one...
"The grabbing hands grabbed all they can... all for themselves
after all it's a competitive world, everything counts in large amounts."
So this was probably why my late mother used to subtly discourage me and my siblings in listening to these British artists back in the '80s - the "second British invasion"... most of them sang about things that kids are not "supposed" to know about... yet. Things that we're bound to find out later anyway... in adulthood, when we're ready to unmask idealism to the "reality" that it is - imperfections and all. Then again, I think it's also possible for one to create his/her own reality - idealism and all.
I'm glad our mother allowed us some independence to think for ourselves back in the '80s, when we were still teenagers... turning the other way when we sneaked in youthful wisdom via Brit music into our little "experimental grown-up world". That made things a bit easier to take these days... just because we were sufficiently warned.
